Plagiarism (i.e., taking any other person’s work or ideas and passing them off as one's own), sharing answers during a test, utilizing ChatGPT or another AI program, or copying the schoolwork of another student are considered cheating and is FORBIDDEN in U.S. schools.
In U.S. schools, plagiarism is unethical, academically dishonest, and grounds for disciplinary actions, including a failing grade or expulsion. Expulsion from school may result in the termination of your AFS Program. Types of plagiarism include:
- Direct plagiarism is the word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else’s work, without attribution and without quotation marks.
- Accidental plagiarism occurs when a person neglects to cite their sources, or misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, groups of words, and/or sentence structure without attribution.
If you are concerned that your schoolwork may be viewed as “plagiarism," please talk with your teacher about it BEFORE submitting the assignment to the teacher.
